If you study Philosophy you will gain a thorough grounding in key philosophical concepts, themes, texts and techniques.

Why should I do Philosophy?

You will analyse philosophical writings, reason from your own judgement, develop the ability to express yourself coherently and contribute to the process of debate.

An AS or full A level course in Philosophy will equip you with a strong set of skills which can be applied not only to Philosophy but to other academic subjects and any written theories and arguments you may encounter in life.

What will I study?

The course begins with a study of the origin of our knowledge entitled Reason and Experience. This is followed by an exploration of the ways in which we perceive the external world. The year continues with a study of what makes someone or ‘thing’ a person and ends with an investigation of the concepts of freewill and determinism.

The second year begins with a study of Plato’s Republic as a set text followed by the detailed study of two major contemporary themes in Philosophy – Moral Philosophy and the Philosophy of Mind.

What can I do with Philosophy?

Many students go on to study Philosophy at University or have combined their studies in a Politics, Philosophy and Economics degree. For most students Philosophy has been an excellent grounding to prepare for a whole range of degrees and careers where decision making is a necessary skill will welcome your experience through the study of Philosophy.
