Many factors will influence your choice of courses. These will include your own interests, any career plans you may have and your expected achievements at GCSE.
Take as much advice as you can from people who know your capabilities such as subject teachers, your form tutor and careers staff at school. Discuss everything with your parents. Feel free to talk to us at school parents evenings and our open evenings.
Remember that each course is taught in a particular way and the styles of learning are very different. Therefore, it is worth exploring how you learn best and what skills and experiences you are bringing to sixth form. The course information in this prospectus is only an outline and there are more detailed course leaflets available at open evenings or on request.
As a broad guide, most students doing A levels choose to do four AS (first year) courses with a view to completing 3 of those subjects at A2 (second year). However, if you are expecting to achieve mainly A grades you will be encouraged to take on the challenge of five AS courses in your first year. If you are expecting to achieve grade Cs at GCSE then your programme at AS may include General Studies as your fourth subject.
If you have not achieved 5 Cs but were very close then we can offer you a GCSE programme to include any re-sits in English or Maths plus a range of new GCSEs. You may also be able to take an AS subject depending on your individual achievement at GCSE.
The college also has a range of apprenticeships and training on offer and many young people have aspired to continue their training through us and have succeeded in attaining NVQs and permanent employment.
You will also be able to choose from a wide range of enrichment activities. These are activities that are on offer but are not a requirement. Many of these activities take place during the college day.
We aim to provide you with the necessary qualifications to move on in your life toward a successful career. The broad range of courses that we offer will give you the breadth of knowledge and experience to go on to higher education or further advanced training. There are many opportunities at the college if you wish to continue your education or training in Taunton. We offer two foundation degrees, higher level training in Business Administration or Accountancy and a whole range of advanced apprenticeships.
