Leisure Studies students presented a cheque for £678 to the Children's Hospice South West

A group of Leisure Studies students raised £678 for the Children’s Hospice South West by hosting a Quiz Night recently. Rosie Coles, Sarah Goodall, Jonny Warry, Ed Heard and Liam Murphy ran the highly successful event as part of their course.

To open the quiz, Annabel Martin of the Children’s Hospice South West gave a presentation about the charity and how the raised money would help to benefit it.

Like all quizzes should be, everything began in a light hearted manner, until the 3rd question of the opening round on music where all teams became determined to win! The final round of the night saw teams engaging in a critical game of Pictionary and the top teams battled it down for the first and second positions.

As well as the quiz, a raffle was drawn with impressive prizes ranging from an iPod Docking Station, to a signed cricket bat from Marcus Trescothick prompting much excitement, especially from the sporty participants!

Rosie Coles who helped to organise the event said “We chose to support the Children’s Hospice South West because it’s a local charity with a chain of hospices over the south west, including here in Somerset. The charity works with both children and their families in helping to support and care for children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. We had a great time organising the event and were really pleased it was such a success.”

Over 150 local school and college students attended the event at Huish

Huish was pleased to welcome Dr Caroline Burt, admissions tutor at Pembroke College, Cambridge University and Richard Partington Senior tutor at Churchill College, Cambridge University recently. They spoke to over 150 Huish students and year 11s from local schools in the afternoon and parents in the evening. Many intelligent and insightful questions were answered with honesty and encouragement.

Dr Caroline Burt said of her visit: “It was great to have students and parents from feeder schools there… We’re always trying to impress upon students in years 10 and 11 the importance of good A Level subject choices for opening doors…. It’s always a very great pleasure to come to Richard Huish College.”

Senior Tutor at Cambridge, Richard Partington added: “We had some fantastic questions from students at the partner schools, and I was delighted that so many parents came.”

Huish has been working with these tutors and others over a number of years now and they always say how intelligent the questions are and how polite and welcoming the students hence their continued willingness to travel considerable distances to help our students.

Organiser Karen Revans said “I am delighted to welcome Caroline and Richard again as they are informative and truthful but make Cambridge an accessible ambition for our students. I am very proud also of the intelligent and thoughtful responses of our students which shows why so many of them make successful applications and are well set up to make a real contribution to society in the future. This was a very enjoyable and happy occasion and I thank Richard and Caroline for making it possible.”

All four students were commended in their debating topics

Huish debaters have managed to prove their skills once again at the latest round of National Debates. Despite fierce competition, student Reece Warren won the coveted award of ‘Best Delegate’ at the recent Model United Nations Debating competition.

The Huish team were relatively inexperienced compared to their competitors but they still managed to finish in 2nd place out of the 47 teams involved. In fact, each member of the Huish debating team was commended in their debating topics involving students Reece Warren, Ciaran McDiamond, Huw Davies and Ben Wylie.

Karen Revans, the Huish Debating Coach said: “They all launched in and gave it their all, were really engaged, loved it and did themselves and us proud!”

‘Best Delegate’ winner Reece Warren added: “The experience was absolutely phenomenal, and having the chance to compete in such a format was extremely enjoyable. My topic was Human Rights, and I eventually won the best debater award out of a delegation of over 40 teams. I’d recommend this to any single person, as the day itself was well-structured, and gave us the opportunity to really fight for what we (and our nation) believe in.”

The Huish teams are currently honing their debating skills ready for the next round of Model United Nations in July and hope to do some major national competitions in the next academic year.

Huish made up a 3rd of the South West Team at the National Championships

Richard Huish College recently took part in the British Colleges Sport National Championships at the University of Bath and returned with an outstanding 55 medals. Huish had the largest representation of students from any college, with 60 Huish students involved across 8 sports, making up a 3rd of the South West Team.

Students qualified for this event back in the Autumn term by winning their South West Regional Tournaments in their respective sports against strong competition from other South West Colleges. Huish boasted Men’s Hockey, Women’s Hockey, and Women’s Basketball teams at the National Championships, as well as numerous individuals who qualified as part of the South West team in Cross-Country, Tennis, Squash, Swimming and Trampolining. The Huish students were treated to a weekend of glorious sunshine to compete in fantastic facilities against the best athletes from colleges in the other 8 regions of England, Scotland and Wales.

Richard Huish students returned with a remarkable 55 medals in all – a record haul for the college, beating 51 medals in 2006 and 2008. Hayley and Sophie Butland won bronze medals in the women’s tennis doubles competition, and silver and bronze medals were won by Paige Merrick and Fred Cooper in the elite trampolining events. Sophie Nurcombe and Sarah Ovens won bronze medals in the Swimming event as part of the South West team.

Men’s Hockey continued their extraordinary record at the BCS National Championships, with a fantastic Sunday performance to snatch a Bronze medal, and Women’s Basketball had a phenomenal tournament, taking bronze having rubbed shoulders all the way with the silver and gold medalists. But even better was to come; Rowan Preece and Jamie Coles romped home to win gold medals as part of the SW team in the men’s Cross Country, and Rachel Langbein, Emma Wilson, Ellen Cheetham and Josie Kimber ran great races to win SW team Gold in the Women’s Cross Country. On top of this, Rachel Langbein ran the race of her life to win individual Bronze in a 60-strong field of runners from across the country.

Finally, after a rocky start on the Friday of competition, Women’s Hockey showed great strength of character to win 6 matches on the bounce against some high class opposition to swoop the Gold medal and become British Colleges National Champions!

All in all it was a highly enjoyable and extremely successful Championship for all involved with Huish Sport and this was topped off, as the South West fended off the other 8 regions to become the overall winning region and claim the Wilkinson Sword trophy for the first time since 2006.

With the largest college representation of the winning region, and an astonishing 55 medals, Richard Huish College have once again cemented their position as one the leading 6th form colleges in the country for sport!

Language students visit Salamanca in Spain

Twenty Language students from Huish recently visited the historic city of Salamanca in Spain as part of their studies which combined 20 hours tuition with cultural visits within and beyond Salamanca. The students also enjoyed a true experience of Spanish life by staying with Spanish families.

The tuition delivered by the ISLA language school was carefully planned and totally fulfilled the needs of the students as one of them described it as “better than I could have ever imagined! I looked forward to school each morning knowing we would be interacting in Spanish in small groups whilst revising the topics we have been studying this year – a brilliant way to revise before the oral examination in a good-humoured atmosphere”.

Day trips were fitted in including visits to Sierra de la Francia with its stunning views, and the ancient city of Avila. Students also had the opportunity to climb the Cathedral tower, visiting St-Esteban convent, Salamanca University (the oldest in Spain) as well as taking part in a Photo Rally and having Salsa lessons to name a few.

Student Kate Holden said “Quite simply, the Huish trip to Salamanca was the best trip I have ever been on! Of course, the main aim of the trip is to develop your linguistic skills but it is also an amazing cultural and social experience. The trip incorporated certain activities to allow us to try their different delicacies such as the Paella supper, Tapas Tour and of course, the famous Chocolate con Churros! It was a truly amazing linguistic and cultural residential visit!”
