Frequently Asked Questions
What additional study do I need to do?
We recommend that you do AT LEAST the same amount of study at home as you do at college. This may be reading the textbook/related articles or work set by your subject teacher.
How can I pay?
We will invoice you or your employer (as detailed on the application form) for the costs associated with the course. If you are paying for yourself, then the course fees can be paid in instalments by standing order. The cost of any materials cannot be spread in this way. Further details are available from the relevant Course Manager.
Can I start the next level (of any course) when I haven’t completed the last one?
You can start to study if you have retakes, but you must be aware of the conflict between revising and studying new material. Discussion with the relevant Course Manager is advised. Some papers must be sat before others (refer to the awarding body).
Do I get the chance to do any additional qualifications while at Richard Huish College?
Yes, there will be plenty of opportunities, some of which will be built into the course (some current FdA Sports students for example have taken a Rugby Ready course, a Fundamentals course and a TOPS course) and others which you will be made aware of, and can choose whether to take them.
How many students do you need to run a class?
We normally set a minimum of ten to run a class. At the lowest and highest levels we may run with less. The final decision will be made by the Faculty Director, having considered all factors involved.
What is the maximum number of students in a class?
We aim to keep classes reasonably small to allow you to gain the most benefit from the tutor and their support. A maximum would be 25, but we aim to split groups of 22 or more (subject to availability of rooms and staff).
Can I convert the Foundation Degree into a full honours degree?
Yes, provided you do well enough on the course to meet the entry requirements you can attend the University College Plymouth (Marjon) or UWE in Bristol for a 3rd year and graduate with a full Honours Degree.
When do courses start?
The longer courses start in September/October, usually commencing with induction, college and course orientation, and other administrative tasks including allocating text books and schemes of work together with an introduction to the relevant subject.
When do I need to apply for courses at Richard Huish College?
The closing date for applications is end of August for courses starting in September the same year. Late applications may be considered, after discussion with the relevant Course Manager, depending on class size and length of time from induction. No new students will be taken on after the October half-term. For details on other courses please contact the college.
Can I play sport for Richard Huish College whilst studying the FdA in Sports Development and Coaching?
In year 1, yes, if you are under 19 at the start of the year. Your timetable will allow you to both train and play in this year. In year 2 you will be too old for our main competitions. There are also plenty of recreational sporting opportunities, and also organisational and officiating roles may be available.
