Support for Learning (Local Offer)
Our ethos is for students with disabilities, medical conditions and learning difficulties to be as independent as possible and working towards independence for their next step into university or work.
Teaching staff are trained to create a level playing field within the classroom and to differentiate within the classroom without isolating you. If specific training is needed for students (for example visually impaired) then we will work with external agencies to provide this to teaching staff.
Students with a disability, medical condition or learning difficulty are welcome at Huish. We have a dedicated team of specialist staff who offer a range of support programmes to students.
Examples of support on offer include:
- Specialist links with external agencies
- Support for transition
- Special exam arrangements
- Specialist equipment and software
- Group or 1:1 support outside of the lesson to enable independent learning
In order to support you in reaching your full potential please ensure that you notify us of any disability, medical condition or learning difficulty so that we can make reasonable adjustments for you to study here.
If we receive an application form with an additional need identified, a member of Students Services will contact you/your parent to discuss your support need.
If you are a high level of support is needed then a member of Student Services will conduct your advice and guidance session during the application process for joining the Sixth Form. They will discuss with you an appropriate Study Programme.
Once a Study Programme and support package is in place, support will be reviewed with the student and support tutor termly. High needs students and students with Education Health Care Plans will also have an annual review which parents are also invited to attend.
Support tutors work with the Careers and Progression team and the student and parents to prepare them for their progression from Huish.
Please contact the Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator (Abbi Skelly) if you require any additional information.
