CORE MATHS

LEVEL: 3 CERTIFICATE IN QUANTITATIVE REASONING
EXAMINING BOARD: OCR (MEI)
TYPE OF STUDY: FULL-TIME, SIXTH FORM

Core Maths is a course for those who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but who are not planning on taking A Level Mathematics.

It is a year-long course and can be taken in Year 1 or Year 2.

At the end of the course, you will come out with a Level 3 qualification – equivalent to an AS (carrying the same number of UCAS tariff points). The qualification is a Level 3 Certificate in Quantitative Reasoning awarded by OCR (MEI). It is assessed by final examination.

Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and most courses will include a Financial Maths element.

It will also help with other A Level subjects – in particular with Science, Earth Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology and Economics.

The skills developed in the study of Mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help you keep up these essential skills. On average, students who study Mathematics after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning prospects.

On this course you will study the following topics:

  • Modelling
  • Statistics
  • Finance
  • Working with exponentials
  • Working with graphs and gradients
  • Geometry and measures
  • Risk
  • Estimation
  • Problem solving
  • Communicating solutions
  • Use of technology

Level 3 standard entry requirements: 5 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above including English Language or Literature. Minimum Grade 5 in Mathematics.
