Health and Social Care is for anyone interested in working in any sort of caring profession. It is an ideal subject if you are thinking about a career that involves working with people in healthcare settings such as a hospital, residential home, social services or early years setting or it can support a higher education application for nursing, midwifery, social work or teaching.
The BTEC Extended Certificate (1 A Level equivalent) will give you an introduction to key themes in health and social care and can be studied alongside two other subjects (either A Level or vocational) to make up the core of your two year Study Programme at Huish. Work placement will enhance learning when studying for the Extended Certificate and there will be opportunities during the year to go on a relevant placement.
The Extended Diploma is a good starting point if you know you want a career in health or social care. The Extended Diploma will make up the core of your two year Study Programme and is broadly equivalent to three A Level qualifications; occupying the same portion of your timetable and worth equivalent UCAS tariff points.
The theoretical element of the study programme will be complimented by work placement, where you will have the opportunity to work with a range of different service user groups. This practical experience will enable you to develop your skills in a professional environment. You will be able to base your work on a number of different environments including health centres, residential homes, schools, nurseries and possibly hospital departments.
Some of the topics you will cover for both qualifications will include: Human lifespan development, Working in health and social care, Promoting public health and Meeting individual care and support needs.
