Overview

Would you like to work in a school/college and interested in education? If so then this apprenticeship can provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to support teachers in an educational setting for children aged 5 and upwards.

In this role (at Level 2 & 3) you will work both alongside the teacher to support classroom activities, and alone with individuals or groups of students.

As an apprentice, you’ll work under the close supervision of a class teacher. Your duties will vary depending on how the teachers you work with plan their lessons but could include:

• Supervising arts and crafts activities
• Helping with outings
• Reading to the class
• Small group work
• Support with planning

Expectations include a passion for the sector. Be presentable, enthusiastic and have a willingness to learn. Be able to follow instructions from others as well as using own initiative. Commitment to carry out duties to a high standard following school policies and procedures.

Learners may progress onto further qualifications specific to the work context such as Level 4. This may include undertaking an advanced apprenticeship or other work related training and development.

Completing this apprenticeship could lead to apotential career as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant or Special Needs Assistant.

Duration
Level 2 – 12 - 18 months
Level 3 – 18 - 24 months

• Understand children and young people’s play and leisure
• Promote an effective learning environment
• Provide displays in a learning environment

Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning:

• Understand schools and colleges as organisations
• Support health and safety in a learning environment
• Understand how to safeguard children and young people
• Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
• Understand how children and young people develop
• Support positive behaviour in children and young people
• Support children and young people during learning activities
• Support English and Maths skills
• Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
• Support assessment for learning
• Engage in personal and professional development
• Support children and young people’s speech, language and communication
• Understand how to support bilingual learners
• Understand how to support learning of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities
• Support children and young people during transitions
• Support the role of play, leisure and extra-curricular activities for children and young people

To do this course you need the following:

  • No formal qualifications required
  • A good level of written and spoken English is required
  • Apprentices must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
