Music students at Richard Huish College have just completed a nine date tour performing at secondary schools across Somerset and Devon. The event, in which the talents of the College’s music students were showcased, aimed to raise awareness of music in schools and inspire young musicians.
Now in its second year, the venture entitled ‘Huish Music on Tour’ was sponsored by Falcon Vehicle Hire, who donated the lorry for the students to perform on, giving the performers the perfect outdoor stage to demonstrate their talents.
Over the two week period students contended with heavy downpours to travel and perform at a multitude of different schools from Kingsmead School, Heathfield Community School, Chilton Trinity School, The Taunton Academy, Stanchester Academy, The Castle School, Court Fields School, Uffculme School and Tiverton High School. Pupils from these schools were also given the opportunity to participate in the event, with many of them stepping up to the challenge and performing to their fellow students.
The tour demonstrated the variety of different music courses and Enrichment the College has to offer. Music Production, Popular Music and Music students all performed, with the addition of Music Production students also working behind the scenes helping with the production of the event.
Huish Music Production Course Manager, Andy Wild said; ‘Huish Music on Tour was a huge success despite the rain! It was incredible to see our students perform to such a high level in front of really enthusiastic audiences, and to see the school bands join them on the stage was really humbling. Seeing the way music brought everyone together highlighted the importance of the subject, and hopefully inspired some students that this is a valid and worthwhile career option.’
The event was also an opportunity to advertise the College’s Music facilities. The £1.4 million Aspen Centre which opened this year is home to both the A Level and Vocational Music courses, as well as the vast array of Music Enrichment activities Huish has to offer. This new building is just one of the many new investments the College has seen in recent years.
Huish is delighted with the continued success of Huish Music on Tour. It was a great opportunity to not only showcase the talents of the students but also to build relationships with local secondary schools and their students.
