Three Richard Huish College students were recognised at The Pride of Somerset Youth Awards 2024 at the McMillan Theatre, Bridgwater on Thursday 16th May.
The awards, founded by the Rotary Club of Taunton and jointly organised by Passion for Somerset CIC and Bridgwater and Taunton College, recognise the inspirational efforts and accomplishments of young people from across the county.
All shortlisted nominees were invited to the presentation evening. Award categories were Arts & Culture, Care, Championing Positive Mental Health, Charity/Volunteer Hero, Community Hero, Environmental Award, Outstanding Courage, The Sandy Padgett Award, Sporting Achievement and Young Person of the Year.
Former Huish student, Lola Waddams, who studied English Literature, Geography and Spanish A Levels, was highly commended for the Care Award sponsored by Somerset County Gazette for her work with Compass Disability. This award recognises those who care for a family member/neighbour and make a real difference.
Current Maths, Music Production and Art student Ernie Shorten won the Art & Culture Award, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Taunton. This award highlights the best excellence and achievement from a young person in an Arts or cultural activity.
Uniformed Protective Services student and former Heathfield Community School pupil, Jack Boobyer won the Charity/Volunteer Hero Award alongside his brother Archie. The award, sponsored by Bridgwater United Community Sports Trust, honours those who have been an inspiration in their work to go above and beyond to help others. Jack and his brother organised walks and raised £7,000 for bereavement support for children who have lost a parent.
Vice Principal, Becky Flower joined the extraordinary trio as they collected their awards at the special presentation evening.
