Chicago cast and crew, The Rotary Club of Taunton and Principal, John Abbott
The Rotary Club of Taunton were treated to an exclusive preview of Chicago ahead of the production coming to The Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton, in the New Year.
Performed by students at Richard Huish College, the world’s longest-running American musical and multi-award-winning CHICAGO is all about fame, fortune and acquittal. Huish has teamed up with The Brewhouse Theatre to present the charmingly clever musical comedy, over 3 nights from 6th to 8th February 2018.
Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, who has always wanted to be a star but can’t quite seem to catch a break. Things seem poised to change when she is arrested for the murder of her lover, and becomes a household name overnight. With the assistance of spectacular lawyer and courtroom showman, Billy Flynn, will she be acquitted for her crime and more importantly, find her name up in lights!? The plot follows as Roxie desperately competes with her idol, nightclub performer and accused double-murderess Velma Kelly, to maintain the media spotlight and attention of Billy.
The Rotary Club of Taunton marvelled at the professionalism of the production as they caught the special early preview. Despite a few months to go until curtain up, students thrilled the audience of guests, staff and students as they performed the classic showstoppers to tremendous applause in a twenty minute excerpt from the show.
Students studying a range of subjects have come together to share in their love of musical theatre to make up the cast and chorus, band and technical crew. Director and Course Manager for A Level Drama and Theatre, Gemma Thompson, commented “It was great for the students to dazzle the members of The Rotary Club, with iconic numbers such as ‘ALL THAT JAZZ’ and ‘CELL BLOCK TANGO’ they seemed to really enjoy the performance. The whole cast are fantastic and really do this legendary musical proud- it’s definitely not one to miss!”
Peter Renshaw, former President of Taunton Rotary Club and current Chairman of Vocational Committee commented, “We try and see what goes on in Taunton, and we thought it was important that Rotarians knew how Richard Huish College had changed and the excellent work they are doing. The bonus of seeing the students perform Chicago was a real bonus. Huish is one of our corporate members and we’re very pleased that we developed this link.”
