Richard Huish College student, Joe Walmsley has been selected to be part of the Team GB Climbing Squad in 2019.
Joe, 18, who is studying for a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, was encouraged to trial a climbing session at Blackbrook Pavilion by his parents at age 11 years and quickly fell in love with the sport. The former Court Fields School pupil, joined Quay Climbing Centre Squad at 14 where he began receiving professional coaching and participating in competitions. Last year Joe took part in the World Championships in Edinburgh for the first time.
To be selected for Team GB, Joe had to compete across three events on the weekend of November 17th; Bouldering, a powerful discipline in which participants have 5 attempts to cross 8 varying boulders, Speed Climb, where participants are timed on how quickly they can complete a vertical climb, and Joe’s favourite, Lead Climb, an endurance event across a longer route. Joe’s combined scores easily secured him a place on the team.
Joe is set to commence training in January and shared “I’m very excited and really looking forward to see what 2019 will bring and new experiences at the World Cup.” Looking to the future, his current aim is to rise as high as he can in the youth cups and succeed in consistent finals. At this time the nearest speed wall is in Sheffield which creates an obstacle to Joe’s training but the dream is to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
