Richard Huish College recently launched the Huish Equestrian team in response to a growing interest from students and the riding team have already had their first success at competition.
Lottie Gaukroger, 17, who studies A Level Biology, Chemistry and Spanish, competed as an individual to win her class and is now is set to compete at the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) Championships in Hickstead in May. She won the 1m-1.05m Arena Eventing Class at Bicton Arena in Devon with her horse Dorothy. The pair were the only combination to complete with no jumping or time faults.
Currently the Huish Equestrian team is made up of three riders, Lottie, Henrietta Ewell and Kirsten Hill. All three girls have been riding horses since a young age and have enjoyed being able to invest more time in their sport since joining the College. Through Huish Equestrian they are keen to continue to rise up the levels of competition.
Matt Nolan, Student Support Manager commented; “Enrichment is an integral part of the Huish experience. Having passions outside of your qualifications doesn’t just allow you to develop additional skills but improves your wellbeing. It has been fantastic to be able to add Huish Equestrian to the extensive range of existing enrichment activities on offer at Huish”.
You can find out more about Enrichment opportunities available at Huish at the Open Event taking place on Tuesday 5th March, 5-8pm. On 19th February, Huish is also hosting a Sport Development Day open to all Year 10 or 11 pupils looking to develop their sport (Men’s and Women’s Football, Rugby, Hockey, Basketball and Netball) whilst studying at the College.
