Richard Huish College have progressed to the 3rd Round of the prestigious NatWest Schools U18 Cup following a 41-40 victory against Taunton School.

The game itself was one of the most intense games seen at Huish in many years with a bumper crowd watching the local derby. Both Taunton School and Richard Huish College were powerful and quick in attack, however each found their opponents to be relentless in defence. Instrumental to the Huish defence was Jamie Guest captaining the side in his second year. He led the team with a fantastic work rate in defence and attack, with quality and leadership shining throughout the game.

A tight battle throughout saw Huish creating lots of attacking play and running off into a two try lead only to be pegged back just after half time following two Taunton tries in quick succession. The Huish attack always looked dangerous, breaking through Taunton's defence at will, whilst in the lineout Andrew Watson and Will Hodgson controlled this with experience far above their tender age. However, it was a moment of individual brilliance that separated the two sides with Oli Ryan's vision and turn of pace allowing him to score under the posts, highlighting his ‘Man of the Match’ performance with the conversion taking Huish ahead. The final score saw Huish run out 41-40 winners to progress to the next round.

Head of Rugby, Chris Heal said, "Huish’s performance was underlined by outstanding discipline only giving away one penalty in open play, both teams played exceptionally well in a competitive and sportsman like manner. A special mention also needs to be made to the young referee in the middle who controlled a feisty encounter throughout allowing both teams to play their expansive rugby."

Richard Huish College now progress to the 3rd Round of the National Cup looking to match a cup run similar to last year where they reached the Quarter Finals of the NatWest Plate (the tier below the Cup). Huish will face Ivybridge Community College in early November looking to secure a place in the last 16.
