On the 15th February, Huish Music students were treated to a visit from professional conductor Pete Harrison. The afternoon saw the College Orchestra come together with teachers taking part in a Secondary Music Conference run by Somerset Music.

In a training day split between Bishop Fox’s and Richard Huish College, an afternoon workshop gave students the opportunity to showcase their musical talents whilst being directed by a professional conductor. Pete has had an impressive career, working as a freelance and regular conductor with orchestras such as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, London and Manchester Concert Orchestras and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra.

After coaching the students and Secondary Music teachers on the basics of conducting, Pete gave individuals the chance to try conducting the orchestra, something many of them had not tried before.

Talking about the event, Kathryn Foyle, A Level Course Manager explained: “It was a fantastic afternoon for everyone involved. The visiting music staff gained practical tips and feedback on their conducting skills, and the student orchestra followed every wave of the baton, with wayward movements sometimes creating interesting results! It gave everyone an insight into the intricacies of conducting and a deeper appreciation of what it takes to conduct and to be conducted.”

The Huish Orchestra is just one example of the musical enrichments the College has to offer; others include Big Band, Rock Choir and String Ensemble just to name a few. Students from across these enrichments will soon be showcasing their talents at the Jazz and Folk Evening on Thursday 28th March.

Huish prides itself on its extensive list of enrichments alongside Music, including Sport, Performing Arts, Subject Societies and Travel opportunities.
