GymThe Sycamore Sports Hall is the home of Huish Sport.

The purpose built facility includes a full sized multi sports arena, including a spacious viewing gallery with seating for 100 spectators, changing facilities, a gym and dedicated classrooms for our Sport courses.

The courts are said to be one of the best in the country with state-of-the art camera technology for performance analysis.

We also have a large playing field for outdoor sports and are looking to extend our facilities with a 4G pitch.

Huish Sport has partnerships with Huish Tigers, Somerset County Cricket, Bristol Bears Academy and Bears Women.

All our academy programmes have a very similar approach in that we wish to develop the individual not just the player; players are given opportunities to enhance their playing, coaching and officiating skills whilst with us.

It is our aim to develop you into a well-rounded adult by the time you leave us with many doors open to you. Each programme has access to the on-site strength and conditioning gym and physio treatment, which is available weekly during the playing season. Below is an insight as to what you can expect from each academy whilst you are with us.

Somerset County Cricket Club Academy

This programme has a long-standing history with the likes of Jack Leach studying with us here at Huish whilst developing his cricketing skills with Somerset Cricket. The programme is a joint venture between us and the Somerset County Cricket Club. The players will have access to strength & conditioning at the College and then group and 2-1 skills sessions at the County Ground from some of Somerset’s top age grade coaches.

Huish Tigers Basketball

Huish Tigers run an in-house performance programme. The aim of the programme is to develop individual skill sets to allow players to progress into professional environments after they complete their studies at Huish. Sessions include:

  • Leadership Development
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Psychology
  • 1v1 Skills Sessions

Each of these sessions is tailor-made to the individual with regular reviews between the player and the Head Coach to decide on the individual path you require. There is no one size fits all when it comes to progression, everyone has their own path and will develop at their own speed. We aim to act as catalyst for players to discover their path to success.

Huish Tigers Rugby and Bristol Bears

We have developed a very exciting partnership with both the female and male Bears programmes over the past 12-18 months. This programme has seen many of our players have an opportunity to progress into the Bears Academy and hopefully into the full senior training squad in time. The programme consists of a joint effort between Bristol Bears and thel Huish Tigers Rugby team. Huish Tigers deliver the day to day coaching for players and sport psychology sessions whilst Bears offer support in strength & conditioning and nutrition to support the physical development of young athletes. Films of these types of sessions can be found on the Huish Sport YouTube Channel.

The Basketball programmes, the development or the performance are really enjoyable. Having games weekly gives you a relief from general work and helps you meet other people from around college. Doing the programme has allowed me to go to the national tournament where we play against teams from all around the country.

I feel as though I’ve made lots of friends through Hockey. Our hockey team has been very successful this season, with our mixed team making it to nationals and our men’s team making it to regionals.

Kristian West, Hockey

I am really enjoying working with the coaches to develop my performance as well as working with a new group of people, to form a team that works well together and to of course win as many games as possible.

I feel like the Rugby enrichment programme is a great thing to be part of and everyone involved in the team is a great asset and we all get along so well. We train with our coach Mike on a Monday and Tuesday and we compete in games on a Wednesday with optional gym sessions on a Friday. Since September we have been on a few Rugby trips. For example, we have been to Bristol, Plymouth, Western and Exeter and are also travelling to Rosslyn Park which is based in London. After games, Mike always gives us feedback from our game performance and he helps us to work on our weaknesses during training.

The main coach, Chris got me involved with Bristol Bears Rugby Academy. This is a very strenuous program consisting of all the Huish Rugby practices and matches, Bristol Bears training once every 2 weeks and 4 hours of gym per week (1 hour cardio). If you are a keen Rugby player willing to put your time and effort into it, you will reap the benefits whether you are playing to create a Rugby career or for personal enjoyment. We work hard as a team and expect the same from our new teammates coming in the new school year. Overall, we all enjoy our Rugby, work hard for each other and always have fun rain or shine.

Costa Galatalis, Rugby

I feel Malcolm (Hockey Coach) has hugely contributed to my development in Hockey. He has provided me with great opportunities within College such as, competing in regionals and as we were successful our team were set to travel to nationals in April 2020 to compete. The Huish team has allowed me to de-stress from the pressures of academic challenges. I have enjoyed the success, partly down to the excellent coaching and commitment of the team.

Katie Davies, Hockey

You’ll find us in the Sycamore Sports Hall reception, stop by if you would like to find out more about current activities on offer. We are supported by a strong team of coaches.
