Governor Vacancy

Governor application form Skills Audit Questionnaire

Location: Taunton, Somerset

We are looking to recruit innovative and committed individuals who share our vision for high-quality, holistic education to become Governors at Richard Huish College.

The role of a College Governor is concerned with driving issues at a strategic level. You will bring an outside perspective to the running of the College, supporting and challenging by asking ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘how’ and ‘when’ of our Senior Leadership Team.

Governors use their professional skills and life experience, in complement with those of college staff, to ensure that Huish continues to provide exceptional education for our local and regional community and can be agile and responsive to current and future needs.

The role represents an exciting opportunity to:

  • use your experience and knowledge to make a difference
  • become involved in strategic organisational development
  • gain new skills and experience
  • help shape the strategic direction of the College
  • monitor the financial wellbeing of the College
  • meet new people and network.

We welcome applications from people who have:

  • a strong interest in education, training and skills
  • commitment to our vision “to provide an exceptional, student-centred education, through a broad and wide-ranging curriculum”
  • an independence of mind, coupled with the ability to provide co-criticism and effective feedback
  • a willingness to develop a strong understanding of the role of governance
  • a commitment to safeguarding, equality and diversity.

We especially want to hear from individuals who have roots in our community and who value the work we do with young people and adults.

At Huish, we want our College Governing Body to represent a diverse range of groups from within our local and regional community and warmly welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds.

With regards to professional skills sets we would, at this time, be especially interested to hear from people with experience and expertise in:

  • Law
  • Finance/Audit
  • Human Resources
  • Education/Public Sector
  • Environmental work.

The work of a Huish Governor involves attending around five meetings of the full board, as well as a strategy event each academic year. Most meetings are scheduled for the early evening and last for about two hours. Naturally, some additional time is involved in reading papers etc. before the meetings.

Appointments to the College Governing Body are for four years in the first instance. Being a Governor is a voluntary role so there is no remuneration other than reasonable out-of-pocket expenses. However, the work of Governors at this College is an essential factor in the educational success of students in the region.

Please return your Application Form and Skills Form to Hannah Clunie, Clerk to the Governing Body – haclunie@huish.education.

Important Information:

  • Huish is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Governors require a criminal record background check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  • We actively promote equal opportunities and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
