Huish Performing Arts EnRICH recently brought the award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen to Taunton in a run of sold-out shows.

From the 3rd to the 5th of February, talented students told the story of Evan, a high school student who struggles with anxiety and feels invisible, but who eventually learns to accept himself.

Directed by Gemma Thompson, Course Manager for Drama, and adapted from the award-winning musical by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the show explored themes of identity and belonging, resonating strongly with audiences.

After five months of rehearsals, the final shows brought together a large ensemble of students involved in acting, singing, dance, lighting, sound, costume design, prop making and stage management. Music EnRICH students also provided an exceptional soundtrack, with audience members “amazed that it was a live band”.

The students’ collective work reflected the ethos of the Huish Performing Arts EnRICH programme, which allows students of all experience levels to refine and showcase their creative skills.

George Williams, a Year 1 student, took on the title role, fulfilling a long-held ambition (having been learning the songs for the last seven years!). Balancing his studies in Biology, Geography and Mathematics with his passion for musical theatre, George said that taking on the role was both challenging and exciting. His performance received enthusiastic praise from the audience who highlighted how his “voice, his presence and his vulnerability created the perfect Evan Hansen character”.

Audience members were wowed with the show, with feedback including:

“First class show! How amazing to see such a fantastically talented cast and team”.

“Amazing. The sound, lighting and costumes were all impeccable. The voices were insane, as well as the use of performance skills.”

“West end quality! The most incredible acting and vocals.”

Everyone at Huish is immensely proud of the hard work, creativity and commitment of all students involved, and would also like to extend their thanks to everyone who came to watch the show or supported the production in other ways.
