Last term, we were delighted to welcome back Alexander Portman Ross (Class of 2024) to College to speak to A Level Politics students about his experience of studying International Relations at Cardiff University.
Whilst at Huish, Alex studied A levels in Politics, Law and Psychology, and was the winner of both the Karen Revans Debating Cup and the Amicus Prize at our Class of 2024 Prizegiving.
Alex delivered an engaging presentation, providing students with a valuable insight into university study. He explained how degree programmes are structured around specialist modules and shared examples of the diverse topics he has studied, including international security, cyber diplomacy, espionage and counter-terrorism, global politics and international law.
Alex also shared some of his own unique experiences at university, where he has taken full advantage of opportunities beyond the lecture theatre. This year, he served as President of Cardiff Model United Nations. He spoke about participating in debates and conferences across the country and visits to major international institutions, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), International Court of Justice (ICJ), the European Parliament and NATO Headquarters.
Alex encouraged current Huish students to get involved in activities such as debating, public speaking, student journalism, political campaigning and Model United Nations, emphasising how these experiences can develop confidence, leadership and communication skills.
Students were particularly interested in hearing about the varied career opportunities open to Politics and International Relations graduates; Alex explained that while many graduates progress into traditional areas such as parliamentary work, diplomacy, the Civil Service, journalism, law and non-governmental organisations, the transferable skills developed through the degree make graduates highly attractive to employers across a wide range of sectors.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to hear from a recent Huish alumnus who has successfully transitioned from Level 3 study to university life. We would like to thank Alex for returning to Huish and inspiring the next generation of Politics students!
