It’s been a jam-packed few months for Geology students, full of industry insights, fieldwork and enrichment opportunities designed to bring the subject to life.

March saw the return of the Earth Science Careers Fair, bringing together industry experts from across the sector, including plenty of Huish alumni, to inspire current students with employment insights and opportunities. Visitors included Geckoella, Tarmac, Binnies, Ricardo, Campbell Reith and Jackson Geo Services.

Also in March, Year 2 students embarked on a residential trip to Cornwall’s Lizard Point, providing the opportunity to revise in readiness for summer exams (it helped that the weather played ball and made the scenery even more spectacular!). Lots of learning was had by all and The Geology team would like to extend their thanks to Sam from The Cornwall Geologist for sharing his expertise.

In April, Year 1 geologists started their fieldwork programme and developed their skills during a visit to Hestercombe quarries, just 5 miles from campus. Students were even able to see the Morte Slate shining in the sun!

Fast forward to May and students visited Dartmoor for more exploration and industry experience. The team at Sibelco UK Preston Manor Works treated the geologists like royalty, with a tour of the working clay quarry. A trip to Haytor also offered great learning opportunities and views across Dartmoor and the South Devon Coast (even if everyone was a little windswept!).

To round off an inspiring few months, in May the Geology team and students celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday in style! Cake was eaten, selfies were snapped and everyone took a moment to appreciate Sir David’s inspiring career and passion for the natural world.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for Huish’s geologists.
