Following Huish’s joining of Citizens Somerset, we’re pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Citizens Somerset Refounding Assembly on Thursday 23rd April from 6.00pm–7.30pm. The event will be held at our campus on South Road, Taunton and is open to all members of the community.

The Refounding Assembly marks a celebration of six years of community organising at Citizens Somerset and will bring together local residents, institutions and leaders to help shape the network’s vision for the future.

Positive change in the community

A part of the wider Citizens UK network, Citizens Somerset supports local people and institutions to campaign for positive change in their community. The new partnership between Citizens Somerset and Huish is already empowering students to play an active role in shaping that change. This commitment was demonstrated during a recent Listening Exercise hosted at Huish and led by Sandra Lawson, Citizens Somerset Community Organiser.

The event brought together students from Lyngford Park Primary, The Castle School and Huish to discuss the issues affecting their local area; in mixed aged groups, students explored topics such as what currently makes them “mad or sad” in their community. With listening being one of the five key stages of community organising, the exercise helped students practice this vital skill while building confidence in engaging with a wide range of people that they may not normally get the chance to interact with.
