Huish students took part in a successful Degree and Higher Apprenticeship Conference yesterday, designed to help those considering this increasingly popular progression route feel informed, confident and ready to stand out in the application process.

The event opened with an engaging introductory talk from Harry Singer and apprentice Jack Lewis from Singer Instruments. Their session set the tone for a focused and informative day centred on real-world career preparation.

Following the introduction, students rotated between a series of interactive activities. These included a recruitment and selection workshop delivered by Future Smart Careers, which offered practical guidance on navigating employer recruitment processes, understanding assessment methods and presenting themselves effectively to prospective employers.

Students also took part in speed networking sessions with representatives from a wide range of organisations. These sessions gave students the opportunity to ask questions, gain industry insights and build confidence when speaking directly with employers about career pathways and apprenticeship opportunities.

The conference concluded with a networking lunch, providing a more informal setting for students and employers to connect.

Degree and Higher Apprenticeships continue to grow as an attractive progression option after college, offering students the chance to gain a qualification while earning and developing valuable workplace experience. The conference played a key role in helping students understand what employers are looking for and how to succeed at every stage of the application process.

Huish would like to extend a huge thank you to all the employers who generously gave their time and expertise, helping to inspire and guide students towards their future careers; participating organisations included Agratas, Albert Goodman, EDF/Hinkley, Future Smart Careers, Griffiths, Honeywell, Numatic, Rolls Royce, Singer Instruments, TMB Precision Engineering and VWV Law

A special congratulations goes to Huish alumni Sam Lacey, Maria Jiga and Esme Jolly, who are currently undertaking Higher or Degree Apprenticeships and represented TMB Precision Engineering, Rolls-Royce and VWV at the event. It has been a particularly busy week for Maria and Esme, who also returned to campus earlier in the week to receive awards at the college’s prizegiving event!

Events such as this continue to strengthen Huish’s commitment to supporting students in making informed, ambitious and successful next steps beyond college.
