Physics students recently won a brace of medals in Round 1 of the British Physics Olympiad, which aims to “encourage the study of physics and to recognise excellence in young physicists”.

Well done to all students who took part and congratulations to Dickson and Dima, who won silver and bronze awards respectively – no mean feat given 3,800 students took part nationally.

Dima said: “This was one of the hardest papers I’ve ever sat, but it has strengthened the problem-solving skills that I hope to use in my engineering degree at university”.

Barrie Hall, Physics Course Manager, said: “Our students chose to pit themselves against some of the most able physics students nationally and sat a challenging paper of questions which university professors have taken and ‘got nowhere’. They can be rightly proud of their efforts in tackling some of the most challenging conundrums in physics.”
