We explore how the English language has developed over time, looking at the influence of the internet and social networking sites, how children learn to talk, how words come into being, and much more.
You will be provided with an analytical approach to the study of language, including work on grammar.
We explore how the English language has developed over time, looking at the influence of the internet and social media, how children learn to talk, and emerging forms of English like Multicultural London English (MLE).
As a minimum, you will need (or equivalent to):
- GCSE Mathematics grade 4
- GCSE English Language grade 4
- plus three more GCSEs at grade 4
The course is 80% exams, 20% coursework.
In the exam you will be required to analyse a range of written and spoken texts, identifying patterns of language use.
For the coursework, you will have an opportunity to complete an investigation into a topic of your choosing.
Past students have progressed to university to study Language, Linguistics, Communication or Creative Writing, however, this course will prepare you for a wide range of courses due to the strong communication skills that are gained.
Students have gone on to a variety of different careers, including Journalism, Writing, Teaching and Law.
Are there any English-based enrichment opportunities?
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved in creative writing activities and we have hosted a lecture series.
