Richard Huish College Law Society has debuted for the first time this academic year. This esteemed and talented collective hopes to enrich young law students’ lives.
The Law Society part of the Huish Law School will provide a structured and professional environment to discuss and explore the law outside the curriculum.
The Law Society is a student-led enrichment and our committee includes both upper and lower sixth students, featuring a Vice and President for both years, Treasurer, Secretary, and Social Secretary. The representation from both years groups is vital for a balanced influence of ideas that truly reflects the society as a whole.
Our committee was established through a voting process after presentations and a campaign speech period. The society members were responsible for voting and crafted the committee themselves during this early stage of the society. Over 50 students took part!
We are also very fortunate to have a sponsor in local Solicitors Davitt Jones Bould, the largest specialist real estate law firm in the UK. Their support, and opportunities provided through summer schemes and work experiences, is invaluable to us and something that can inspire and progress students into a career in the legal field.
Gintare Saladziute, from DJB and a previous Huish Student herself, has said “With numerous Huish Alumni at our Business Services Centre in Taunton, and as the largest specialist real estate law firm in the UK, sponsoring the Law Society was the obvious next step in not only giving back to the community but also continuing to build the long-term relationship with the college”.
They are also providing us with some financial support, donations for use by the committee and members. We are very thankful for their sponsorship!
The Society has had several successful meetings already, with a suggestion box, talk from the law firm sponsor Davitt Jones Bould and a workshop on fingerprinting with Michael Morgan, a Special Police Officer. The committee was tasked with decorating the two law classrooms for Christmas, an inclusive way for all society members to get involved in the Christmas spirit.
The Law Society committee has much in the works for future sessions, such as several talks with barristers secured, and trips to go and watch cases. The purpose of the society is to enrich, improve and empower students into a future of law, whether that be through talks, trips, workshops or study groups.
The Law Society is a place of collaboration for mutual benefit between the committee and members, made possible by our sponsors. The opportunities to enrich and widen the breadth of knowledge that are available for our society are beneficial, crucial and advantageous towards the first steps of a law-based career.
We cannot wait to see what the Law Society achieve in 2025!
