Visual Arts success on the national stage

Two students recently took part in the South West heat of the National Gallery’s Articulation Prize, a competition that invites 16–19‑year‑olds to deliver insightful presentations on works of art or architecture.

Maria Gilroy‑Toscano (presenter) and Emily Crew (script refiner) worked on a 10-minute presentation exploring James Tissot’s 1873 artwork Too Early. Their hard work paid off, with Maria’s presentation being chosen as the overall regional winner by artists Fleur and Alastair Mackie.

Maria will travel to London to compete in the grand final at the National Gallery next month. Best of luck in the next stage, Maria!

Evie Titley, a former Monkton Wood Academy pupil, is also celebrating remarkable academic success.

A Chemistry, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Further Mathematics student, Evie has recently been awarded a Gold Award in the University of Cambridge’s Stem Smart programme. So far she has completed 2,000 questions and attended over 50 hours of tutorials as part of the programme. Last year she also took part in a summer school at the University of Cambridge.

When she first joined Huish, Evie hadn’t considered applying to Oxbridge, but through determination and hard work she has now been offered a place to study Chemistry at the University of Oxford! Huge well done to Evie on this achievement.

Year 1 student Gabriele Peters, who studies Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics A Levels, recently impressed judges at the long‑running Taunton Festival of the Arts.

Gabriele returned from the event with two trophies for solo guitar performances and a Highly Commended certificate for performing piano in a duet with a violinist. Congratulations Gabriele!

A huge well done to all of these students for their impressive cross-curricular achievements!
