43 Chemistry students from Richard Huish College had the unique opportunity to attend an Antibiotic Synthesis Workshop at the prestigious University of Oxford.
The workshop offered students a chance to step into the shoes of professional scientists for the day, working in state-of-the-art laboratories and using advanced equipment, including infrared spectrometers valued at over £40,000 each. Throughout the day, students synthesised a potential antibiotic compound, applied vacuum filtration techniques, and analysed their products using infrared spectroscopy and thin layer chromatography. The final step involved testing their compounds on bacteria to assess their effectiveness.
The experience was not only academically enriching but also deeply inspiring. Students were in awe of the impressive facilities and the real-world relevance of the tasks they undertook. The workshop helped bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application, giving students a clearer understanding of how their studies can contribute to solving global challenges.
“We’re incredibly proud of how our students engaged with the workshop,” said Joanna Clare, Course Manager for Chemistry. “They returned to college with new skills, greater confidence in the lab, and a renewed sense of purpose. Experiences like this are invaluable in shaping future aspirations.”
This visit is part of Huish’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for further study and careers in science and beyond.
