Huish students have been taking part in Chemistry Week this week, an annual event coordinated by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
This year’s theme, ‘Taking Action’, encouraged learners to explore the practical applications of chemistry and understand its impact on everyday life. Our students embraced this challenge through a series of hands-on investigations and experiments.
The busy week of experiments began on Monday, when Chemistry A Level Year 2 students analysed the percentage of iron in supplement tablets, applying their knowledge of quantitative analysis. Meanwhile, Year 1 students learned about intermolecular forces by investigating PVA glue and borax slime, which offered a fun and interactive way to understand chemical bonding.
On Tuesday, Level 2 Combined Science students investigated the properties of salt. This was followed on Wednesday by A Level Year 2 classes using iodometric titration to study the concentration of chlorine in bleach.
Thursday saw Year 2 students delve into the topic of reaction rates, conducting experiments to observe how different factors influence chemical processes. Finally, on Friday, Level 2 students focused on covalent bonding, learning how atoms share electrons to form stable molecules.
At Huish, we are proud of our exceptional Chemistry results. In our A Level Chemistry Class of 2025, we achieved a 100% pass rate, with an impressive 12.1% of students earning an A* (which was well above the national average of 9.2%!). These achievements reflect the dedication of our students and expertise of our teaching staff.
